Where is based upon six charango improvisations. The instrument was steel strung and variously open tuned, picked, plucked, strummed, bowed, etc.. These six improvs became the basis for six individual tracks. The initial improvisations were left as is, cut up, granular synthesized, filtered and generally mutated. An attempt was made to combine elements of electro-acoustic sound design with somewhat traditional musics to form a more tonal acoustic assemblage. The charango merely unifies the entire project, granting it cohesiveness over it's duration. Moments of abstract sound transform into gentle melodies, a sort of alien folk music emerging overall.
Sound sources and instruments include banjo, bells, berimbau, bowls, charango, dog show, dremel tool, expressway, flutophone, gourdolin, guitars, hand drum, harmonica, mandolin, music boxes, parade, pliers, rainstick, st bernard, shortwave, sword, tarka flute, theremin, three string thing, ukulele, water tower, woodpecker, xerox machine and more. 70 minutes. ©Heath Yonaites.
