The Panorama™ Utilities Page

Copyright©1999, ProVUE Development Corporation

This page exists for the benefit of all Panorama™ users and developers to exchange utilities and tips for programming in our favorite environment. Included here are items I have written that I feel may be of interest to others as well as an area for any other Panorama™ user to share their work as well. If you have a file that you think would be of interest or enlightenment to other users, be sure to send it to me for posting at this site. I have also included links to other Panorama™ intensive locations.

Wild Icons FREE SLOT MACHINE GAME

Check out my Wild Icons page for your free download and information on this Panorama based slot machine game. Fully customizable for your enjoyment. Have fun! If you download Wild Icons, be sure to download the version for current Panorama users. This version has my special Panoram Engine removed since it is known to cause problems with the standard Panorama and generally screws up other Panorama icons.

Grabber 84k binhex

Grabber is a inspection tool that will "grab" all the available information pertinent to your file at the moment it is run. By installing this add on into your file, you can get a window showing all your variable, their type and their current values. You will also be given a list of all the fields, their type and their values in the active record. Full information is also give regarding other aspects of your file as would be returned with the various info() and dbinfo() functions. Currently this is designed to be installed within your file, but a future update will allow it to run as an independent file and "grab" info from any other open Panorama™ file.

ProgBars 46k binhex

A small file that demonstrates how to construct progress bars in Panorama™. There are several variations shown together with one using animation and another taking advantage or a pie chart to work it's magic. This file was shown in the ad for the "provue98conference" cd-rom edition under "Cool Panorama Programming Tricks"

TransparencyDemo 110k binhex

Small demo to show how transparency works with FlasArt objects. There is an underlying text object that contains instructions on how to create PICT images with transparency and transparent backgrounds in either Photoshop or Canvas. Overlying this are four dragable FlashArt objects that show how the various layers affect display and how the transparency affects objects on lower layers.

ForceOpen 17k binhex

.A small utility that will force open any Panorama file without running the .Initialize procedure. A great aid in an emergency to gain access to files that normally crash on openning!

EmailerPirate 32k binhex

This is a utility to import your Claris Emailer files (pre version 2) into a Panorama database environment. You can delete the files that are imported from the Emailer folder or leave them there. Once imported you can sort and view them as needed and arrange them by subject with the original subject grouped with all the replies. Other utilities allow for the removal of Claris error messages and the removal of duplicate items. There is also a built-in correction for the normal "Sent" date error that shows up when the originating email program uses a four digit year format (Emailer would show this as 9/2/19 instead of 9/2/99). Email viewing can be done directly in the data sheet or in the :"Viewing Plank" form that includes all the utility buttons.

PanOpener 67k binhex

This is a simple data fork viewer/editor for use within Panorama. You can load the data fork of any file up to 4 Megs (or whatever your memory allocation will allow) and view/edit it in 50K segments in a scrolling Word Processing Super Object. You also have the ability to save the text to a SimpleText file or enter a custom Type/Creator of your own and save it that way. Basic filtering is provided to display control characters and mark tabs and returns for identification. as well as converting PC line feeds to returns. Full file information is also shown in the view window. A Converter window is also available that converts any selected text up to 2400 characters long into hexadecimal and ASCII values for side by side display and comparison. A supplemental window will also show the selected text along side its binary equivalent. Full print out is provided from the main window and a 1500+ selected character conversion print out is provided on the Conversion page for the selected text and hex/ASCII conversions.

Ellipse 162k binhex

More of a novelty than anything else, this file shows a distinctive oval or round window seldom seen on the Mac before. This version incorporates an updated WDEF resource which should eliminate the crashing problems experienced earlier on some machines/systems. Be aware that this resource will not be convertible for use on the future release of the PC version of Panorama.

Mud 16k binhex

This is the basic text encryption algorithm submitted to the Panorama qna list by Dave Boruff and expanded upon by yours truly. I have configured it here to highlight the difference between procedures that depend primarily on loops to manipulate data and much speedier non-looping alternatives. Buttons are provided to allow you to encrypt and decrypt the text with either method and compare the differences in speed.

Scrambler 16k binhex

This may only be encryption 101 but it is a simple way to send and receive private messages. When you double click this mini-application, it will encrypt whatever text is currently on the clipboard. If there is text on the clipboard that has already been encrypted with Scrambler it will decrypt it to plain text again. The algorithm is not as complex as that used in Mud above, but certainly good enough to discourage the average prying eye.

PasswordDemo 16k binhex

This is another small demonstration file that shows a method of password entry without displaying the text being entered. As someone enters their password, bullets are displayed in the entry box instead of the actual text they are typing. The correct password in this demo is "Panorama" and entering it will allow you to check out the various procedures and the entry form.
